Aikido in Ireland

Under the direction of Seán MacRuairí (John Rogers) as President of the Irish Aikido Federation (IrAF) Aikikai, Aikido training has been initiated in Belfast, Clare, Cork, Galway, Kerry, Limerick, Wicklow and in all the University Colleges in Ireland during the 1980’s.

Personal background

After graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, with a degree in Natural Sciences, Seán MacRuairí opened an aikido club in 1977. The Irish Aikido Federation was formed in 1979. He worked in the healthcare industry and ran his own training consultancy in Ireland before becoming a full time aikido instructor.

In 1987 he opened a full time dojo in Dublin (Gyo Fu Kan) which closed in March 2008, and a new full time dojo is now opened: the National Aikido Training Centre, Unit 25 Trinity Technology and Enterprise Campus, Macken Street, Dublin 2

Seán MacRuairí is regularly invited to instruct abroad and has taught in Austria, Bulgaria, England, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Tenerife, and the USA.
